SC receives writ petition against TikTok ban

KATHMANDU: A writ petition challenging the government’s decision to ban TikTok in Nepal has been filed in the Supreme Court.

Senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi submitted the writ on Friday, currently undergoing the registration process.

The cabinet, in a meeting last Monday, declared the ban citing TikTok’s alleged disruption of social harmony.

Advocate Tripathi’s petition highlights concerns over the implications for constitutional democracy and citizens’ rights and freedoms, emphasizing the need for adherence to the rule of law when shutting down TikTok.

Information Officer of the Apex Court, Govinda Ghimire confirmed five writs have been lodged against the TikTok ban in the Court. He mentioned that the petitions are undergoing scrutiny, and a decision regarding their registration or acceptance is pending.
