UML lawmaker Mandal elected as Madhes province Speaker



JANAKPURDHAM: Ramchandra Mandal of CPN-UML has been elected as Speaker of the Madhes Province Assembly.

In the election held for the speaker on Tuesday, Mandal received 74 votes.

54 votes are required to achieve a majority in the 107-member provincial assembly.

The ruling coalition party candidate, Mandal became the Speaker with the support of UML, Janata Samajbadi Party, Janamat Party, Loktantrik Samajbadi Party, CPN-Maoist Center, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Nepal Sanghiya Samajbadi Party and independent parliamentarians.

Nepali Congress and CPN-Unified Socialist voted in opposition.

Mandal was elected as a member of the Provincial Assembly from Dhanusha Constituency No. 1(2). His rival Nepali Congress candidate Jangilal Rai got 29 votes.

In the election held on Tuesday, 103 members participated in the voting.
