HURPES urges safe release of Bipin Joshi held by Hamas

KATHMANDU: The Human Rights and Peace Society (HURPES) has made appealed for the secure release of Nepali student Bipin Joshi, who is currently being held captive by the Palestinian extremist group, Hamas.

HURPES has strongly condemned the inhuman actions perpetrated by Hamas, which serve as a grave example of terrorism.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Society expressed its deep concern over the appalling acts, such as the heartrending loss of unarmed civilians, including Nepali citizens in Israel, at the hands of Hamas. The statement emphasized that Hamas’s act of abducting and detaining over 100 innocent civilians represents the utmost form of terrorism. The Society fervently calls for the swift release of all hostages, with Bipin Joshi included.

HURPES asserted that both the actions of Hamas and the actions of Israel’s government pose a severe threat to global peace.

Furthermore, HURPES voiced its serious apprehension regarding the conflict that erupted in the Middle East subsequent to the terrorist attack launched by Hamas on October 7, 2023, and its subsequent escalation.

“At its core, the war was initiated by Hamas through acts of terrorism. It is important to underline that the terrorist activities of Hamas do not represent the Palestinian self-determination movement. Consequently, no one should associate Hamas with the cause of Palestinian self-determination, and the entire international community should concentrate on combating terrorism,” the statement underscored.

The society emphasized that any form of brutality directed against the innocent Palestinian population constitutes a crime against humanity.

Additionally, HURPES called attention to the fact that Israel is bound by international humanitarian law and established global standards when defending itself.

“The directives issued by Israel, including the evacuation of settlements housing nearly 1.1 million northern Gaza residents, the orders to evacuate hospitals in Gaza, the utilization of prohibited lethal weaponry under international law, and inhumane blockades such as cutting off electricity, water, and food supplies to Gaza, are all deemed crimes against humanity, and the Peace Society vehemently condemns them,” the statement adds.

Given the threats posed by both Hamas’s acts of terrorism and Israel’s actions to world peace, the Peace Society issued an appeal to the international community to take special measures aimed at stopping terrorism, addressing arrogance, and bringing an end to the conflict.
