Monsoon retreats from Nepal, snowfall likely in highlands

KATHMANDU: Nepal bid adieu to this year’s monsoon last night, marking a delayed withdrawal by 13 days from the usual expected date of October 2.

Having graced Nepal since May 31, the monsoon lingered for 124 days.

Currently, a partial influence of the western wind persists in the western part of the country.

As per the latest update from the Weather Forecasting Division, the weather is anticipated to be clear in the hilly areas, with intermittent showers.

During the afternoon, notable changes in the weather are expected across hilly regions, encompassing Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces.

Conversely, the weather is projected to remain generally clear throughout the rest of the country.

There is a likelihood of sporadic light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in certain locales within the Sudurpaschim, Karnali, and Lumbini states, with a few spots in the hilly regions of other states also likely to experience similar conditions.

Moreover, a few locations in the high hills and mountainous areas of the Sudurpaschim and Karnali provinces might witness light snowfall.

Nighttime forecasts suggest clear weather in the hilly areas, particularly in the Sudurpaschim, Karnali, and Lumbini provinces.

The Division has urged people to take necessary precautions to mitigate any potential inconvenience caused by the rain and snowfall, as well as the associated risks of lightning, which could impact public health, agriculture, daily life, and transportation, both on roads and in the air.
