KATHMANDU: The enrollment of migrant workers in the Social Security Fund (SSF) is on the rise, with an increasing number of workers joining the scheme.
These workers have obtained labor permits and pursued overseas employment. Currently, a total of 260,082 migrant workers have become members of the SSF’s social security program.
On March 22, 2023, the government implemented a provision that requires migrant workers to be associated with the Social Security Fund prior to acquiring a work permit.
In total, 423,092 workers from the formal sector have joined the Fund, while 639,174 workers, including those from both the formal sector and the overseas employment sector, have become associated with the SSF.
Under various social security schemes, the Fund has disbursed claims amounting to Rs 5 billion to contributors.
Bibek Panthi, the spokesperson for the Fund, stated that 18,000 employers have registered with the Fund, contributing a total of Rs 36.26 billion thus far.
The Fund collects a monthly contribution of 11 percent from formal sector workers and 20 percent from employers.
To date, a total of 88,585 contributors have received different entitlements from the Fund.
