CAN urges govt to reconsider TikTok ban, advocates taxation and regulation to boost economy

KATHMANDU: The Federation of Computer Associations of Nepal (CAN) has urged the government to reassess the decision to ban TikTok in the country.

CAN believes that instead of a ban, bringing TikTok under taxation and establishing regulations within a commercial framework could contribute positively to the country’s economy.

In a released statement, CAN emphasized the potential benefits of regulating small and medium businesses, especially if they are given the opportunity to expand their market. The Federation appealed to the government to reconsider its stance, acknowledging that the evolution of information and communication technology presents both opportunities and challenges.

“CAN calls upon the government to engage in negotiations and coordination through an expert team for the responsible use of all social media platforms in Nepal. As a part of the private sector, we stand prepared to collaborate with the government in any technical capacity,” the statement affirmed, expressing their commitment to contribute to the development of a digital Nepal.
