KATHMANDU: A hearing of proposed Chief Justice (CJ) Hari Krishna Karki is underway at the Parliamentary Hearing Committee.

The Parliamentary Hearing Committee had earlier decided to call Justice Karki on Thursday morning following a discussion with the complainant on Wednesday.

Earlier the complainants had protested before the Committee demanding that they should be allowed to justify their claim in front of proposed Chief Justice Karki.

The meeting of the Constitutional Council held at Singha Durbar on May 8 recommended the name of Karki as the Chief Justice. The hearing was delayed as there was no parliamentary hearing committee in existence then.

The Supreme Court has been under the leadership of the acting Chief Justice since February 13, 2022, the day an impeachment motion against the then Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana was registered in the parliament.

The Parliamentary Hearing Committee comprises five members each from Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML, two members from CPN-Maoist Center, and one member each from Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP)and Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP).

Ramesh Lekhak, Ishwari Devi Neupane, Jeevan Pariyar, Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, and Rameshjung Rayamazhi are members from NC, and Padam Giri, Mahesh Kumar Bertaula, Lilanath Shrestha, Ishwari GM, and Devendra Dahal from UML.

Similarly, Janardhan Sharma and Jagaprasad Sharma of the Maoist Center, Dolprasad Aryal of RSP, Pashupati Shumsher JBR of RPP, and Prakash Adhikari of JSp are also in the Committee.
