NC will not bear the burden of decisions made by individual party leaders: Gagan Thapa

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary, Gagan Thapa, has voiced strong reservations regarding the recent ban on TikTok, responding to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda’s assertion that the move had the backing of both ruling and opposition parties.

Expressing his concerns on social media on Monday, Thapa raised questions about the transparency of the decision-making process and sought clarification on the specifics of discussions held with the Nepali Congress.

He underscored that decisions made in closed-door meetings among party leaders should not be automatically considered as agreements between parties, stressing that a party’s decisions require internal deliberation and consensus.

Thapa stated that the entire party should not bear the burden of decisions made by individual party leaders, emphasizing the importance of democratic processes within the party structure.

He asserted, “Opposition to wrong decisions is not only permissible but necessary,” and highlighted the significance of consistently condemning wrong actions, irrespective of whether a party is in power or in opposition.

In adherence to democratic principles, Thapa claimed, “Regardless of who is in power, any attack on freedom of expression will be opposed by the Nepali Congress.”

He further emphasized the party’s unwavering commitment to opposing such actions, irrespective of the political context, maintaining that wrongdoing should be condemned regardless of the perpetrator.
