Nepal beat PNG by 9 wickets, one win more to qualify for ICC World Cup

KATHMANDU: Nepal has defeated Papua New Guinea (PNG) by 9 wickets in the final series of ICC World Cup Cricket League-2 undergoing in TU Cricket Ground Kirtipur, Kathmandu.

This is Nepal’s record win against PNG. Nepal had never beaten PNG by such a wide wicket margin before.

On Monday, Nepal was set a modest target of 96 runs by PNG. Nepal met the target in 7.4 overs with the loss of one wicket. In Nepal’s victory, Asif Sheikh scored an unbeaten 53 runs off 21 balls with 8 fours and three sixes.

Similarly, Kushal Bhurtel played an innings of 33 runs off 14 balls with four fours and two sixes. Kushal Malla scored 12 runs in 13 balls with one four and one six. Chad Soper could only take one wicket for PNG.

Before that, PNG, who lost the toss and were invited to bat, were bowled out for 95 runs in 32 overs. For PNG, captain Assad Vala scored 20, Sese Baw 18, Charles Amini 16 and Hiri Hiri scored 14 runs.

The rest of the batters could not score runs even in double figures.

Sandeep Lamichhane bowled brilliantly to contain PNG cheaply. He took 5 wickets with 25 runs in 10 overs with a maiden. Sandeep took 5 wickets for the third time.

Similarly, Kushal Malla, Lalit Narayan Rajbanshi got two wickets each and Sompal Kami got one wicket.

With this victory, Nepal has retained the possibility of directly qualifying for the ODI World Cup by being in the top three of League-2.

Provided Nepal beats UAE in the final match on Thursday, it will qualify for the World Cup.
