EC to maintain Ramsahay Yadav’s candidacy for Vice President

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has decided to maintain the candidacy of Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) candidate Ramsahaya Yadav for the post of Vice President.

Earlier, CPN-UML candidate Ashtalakshmi Shakya and Janamat Party candidate Mamata Jha had protested claiming Yadav could not be a candidate as the President-Elect has already been a male member. However, Election Officer Mahesh Sharma Paudel informed that the Commission has decided not to cancel Ramsahay Yadav’s candidature.

Citing the constitutional provision that the President and Vice-President could not be of same gender or ethnic community, EC decided to accept Yadav’s candidacy citing he was from another community.

After the EC decision, JSP is planning to withdraw Pramila Yadav’s vice-presidential candidacy.

According to sources, the 10 party ruling coalition has called a meeting to make a final decision on the candidacy for the post of Vice-President.
