Gagan Thapa expresses discontent over party bias in CIAA Commissioner appointments

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary and lawmaker Gagan Thapa has said that there is a party bias in the appointments of officials at the Commission for the Investigation of the Abuse of Authority (CIAA).

Speaking in the State Affairs Committee on Wednesday during the discussion on the CIAA Third Amendment Bill, Thapa said that due to the partisanship in the appointment, the results were not as expected.

There is a party bias in the appointment. Lately, even the judiciary has sought a power-sharing,” he said. “On the other hand, there is a situation where the CIAA has to sue its own members, so the appointment criteria should be made.”

The NC General Secretary demanded to include the legal criteria for the appointment in the Bill itself.

“Let’s bring the National Vigilance Center under the authority, let it look at the improper actions. Let’s also make a legal system,” he said. “Let’s also specify what can and can not be regarded as the policy-decision of the government.”
