KATHMANDU: The anticipated visit of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Nepal has been postponed due to the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.

Secretary-General Guterres had initially been scheduled to arrive in Nepal on October 13.

Sewa Lamsal, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed the postponement of Secretary-General Guterres’ visit to Nepal, which had originally been planned for October 13. She stated that a new date for the visit would be determined in consultation with Guterres.

“The Israel-Palestine conflict has created a new situation, necessitating the postponement of his visit to Nepal. We will coordinate and arrange a new date that aligns with both his schedule and ours,” she explained.

The Secretary-General’s visit coincided with a time when Nepali political parties were actively working to resolve ongoing conflicts. Secretary-General Guterres had received an invitation from Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ to visit Nepal during the latter’s visit to address the United Nations General Assembly.

During his planned stay in Nepal, Secretary-General Guterres was scheduled to have meetings with President Ramchandra Paudel, Prime Minister Dahal, as well as various political party leaders. Additionally, he had intended to meet with conflict victims.
