Westerly winds gain momentum in Nepal as monsoon retreats

KATHMANDU: As the monsoon, characterized by the eastern wind, gradually departs from Nepal, the westerly wind has started to gain momentum.

The Weather Forecasting Division reported the flow of western winds into the western regions of the country following the monsoon’s withdrawal.

The Division explains that the wind entering from the east is referred to as the easterly wind, while the westward-moving wind is termed the westerly wind.

“The normal effects of the western wind have commenced in the western part of Nepal. While the western wind is currently not very active, it can bring about regular rainfall in the western region,” according to the Division.

Once the monsoon completely exits Nepal, the western wind will intensify, leading to snowfall in the Himalayas and surrounding mountain areas.

According to the Division, the western wind, in particular, brings extreme cold.

Currently, the monsoon has retreated from Sudurpaschim Province, most areas of Karnali, and the western part of Lumbini Province.

According to the Division, the eastern and central parts of Nepal are currently experiencing a partial effect of monsoon winds, while the western regions are under the influence of westerly winds.

The monsoon is anticipated to depart from more regions in Nepal within this week.

Meanwhile, according to the Division, today’s afternoon weather is expected to be partly cloudy to generally clear in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.

During this period, there is a possibility of light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in a few places in Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, and one or two places in Madhesh and Lumbini provinces.
