KATHMANDU: The Nepali Army (NA) acknowledges the potential spillover effects of terrorist activities in neighboring countries on Nepal.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Nepali Army Headquarters on Sunday, Lieutenant General Prakash Deuja emphasized that although Nepal has not experienced significant issues thus far, the NA is vigilant about the potential influence of its neighboring nations.
“Although our country has not faced major problems, we are mindful of the ongoing terrorist activities in neighboring countries and the possibility of their repercussions reaching us,” he stated.
“This awareness has prompted us to undertake various preparedness measures.”
Lieutenant General Krishna Prasad Bhandari affirmed the Nepali Army’s readiness to confront any challenging situations.
“The international perspective on our army, whether it’s involved in warfare or training, underscores the importance of remaining ever-prepared, following a thorough analysis of the prevailing circumstances,” Bhandari remarked.
The present security context highlights border security as the country’s primary security concern.
“While we have control over the northern border, an open southern border poses a significant national security challenge,” added Deuja.
He noted, “An open border exacerbates the risk of cross-border organized crime, including illegal trade, drug and arms smuggling, and human trafficking.”
“To effectively combat cross-border organized crime, we must tighten our border controls and explore collaborative efforts with other security agencies,” he emphasized.
Deuja also highlighted the pressing issue of cybersecurity within the country. “Cybersecurity is a serious challenge that we need to address comprehensively and proactively,” he concluded.
