KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba expressed today that the first elected Prime Minister and revered leader of the people, BP Koirala, serves as his primary political idol.

During the inauguration of the three-day ‘BP Literature Festival,’ organized by the Nepali Congress in the capital city, Deuba paid homage to BP Koirala, a founding member of the NC, characterizing him as a multifaceted personality.

The NC President emphasized, “Koirala was a source of inspiration and an exemplary political thinker. Even in the realm of literature, he continues to be an immortal figure. We have steadfastly followed the path illuminated by his political ideologies.”

He further asserted that ongoing efforts aim to advance the nation in accordance with BP Koirala’s vision. NC President Deuba noted that Koirala’s political doctrines have not only captured the attention of all political parties but also guided their actions.

He expressed optimism that the Festival would disseminate knowledge encompassing various aspects of BP Koirala’s legacy, including his political philosophy, literary contributions, his struggles, as well as his impact on social, economic, religious, and cultural domains, particularly among the younger generation.

“Bhim Prasad Koirala was a distinguished leader and a renowned literary figure who upheld simplicity as a virtue. When we had the privilege to meet him, he would emphasize the importance of being good individuals. He delved deeply into the philosophies of Marx and Gandhi. He perceived Gandhi’s principles as pertinent to love, peace, non-violence, and democracy, while he connected with Marx in the context of economic equality,” Deuba elaborated.

He highlighted that the Nepali Congress has embraced multiparty governance and the democratic socialist economic system as its fundamental principles and ideologies.

He underscored BP Koirala’s global recognition, noting that he was not just a national leader but also achieved international prominence. Koirala was revered as both a political philosopher and a literary luminary who ardently championed the causes of inclusivity, justice, equality, and freedom for the people. He steadfastly upheld the values of nationalism, democracy, and socialism.

The Nepali Congress (NC) has organized the Festival to commemorate the 110th birth anniversary of BP Koirala, the founding leader of the NC. The event commenced at 9:00 am today at the NC central office in Sanepa, Lalitpur.

Collaborating with various organizations, including the Nepal Writers’ Association, the Festival features a poetry symposium, gazhal recitations, musical performances, an art exhibition, documentary screenings, and a photo exhibition, according to Min Bahadur Bishwokarma, chief of the Information, Communications, and Publicity Department of the NC. The festival’s opening session also featured the screening of a documentary titled “Hijacking for Democracy.”
