SC hearing on writ filed against Koshi CM Thapa’s appointment

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) is hearing a writ filed against the appointment of Chief Minister Uddhav Thapa in the Koshi Province government today.

The main opposition party, CPN-UML, had filed a petition with the Supreme Court, claiming that the Thapa-led government, which was formed with the endorsement of the Speaker of the Koshi Province, is illegal.

Outgoing Chief Minister Hikmat Karki, representing the UML, registered a writ on Friday, alleging that the Speaker, who is expected to be impartial, played a role in toppling his government in the Koshi Province.

With the support of the Nepali Congress, Maoist Center, Unified Socialist Party, and Janata Samajwadi Party, Parshuram Khapung, the Chief Minister of the Koshi Province, appointed Thapa as the new Chief Minister on Thursday.

The newly-appointed Chief Minister, Thapa, took the oath of office and secrecy on Friday.
