KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recommended the government investigate and prosecute 130 people, including Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Chairman Upendra Yadav, in the Gaur incident carried out 16 years ago.

As many as 27 Maoist workers were killed and 115 others injured in a clash between the Maoists and cadres of Madhesi Janadhikar Forum on March 21, 2007.

Cadres of the Forum had attacked the then CPN (Maoist) when both the sides organized a mass assembly in the same venue.

A meeting of the NHRC decided to recommend an investigation against 130 people, including Yadav, the then Chairman of the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum.

The NHRC has recommended that those involved in the incident be investigated immediately and charges be registered against those found guilty.

The relatives of the deceased filed a police complaint against the people involved in the incident.

Similarly, the government also formed a commission of inquiry. The Commission report was also submitted to the government.

However, even after 16 years, the NHRC has directed the government to give justice to the victims’ families, stating that action has not been taken against the culprits.

The NHRC has recommended to the government to investigate 66 people accused by the victim’s family and 130 people, including 64 who have been found guilty by the government-formed Commission.
