KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Police have detained 12 individuals suspected of aiding Nepalis in joining the Russian Army, following operations conducted in Maharajgunj, Lainchour, and Thamel areas.

The arrested individuals are identified as Drona Dangi, Dipen Pariyar, Kshitij Giri, Subhash Lama, Manish Neupane, Rosal Maharjan, Hari Bahadur Bishwakarma, Ishwar Adhikari, Gokarna Aryal, Sujata Dahal, Santosh Roka, and Santosh Nepal.

The police allege their involvement in organizing travel for Nepali citizens to Russia via India on tourist visas and assisting them in enlisting in the army there.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the tragic deaths of six Nepali citizens during their service in the Russian army. In response, the government has urged Moscow to refrain from recruiting Nepalis. While Nepal’s official policy doesn’t endorse enlistment in the Russian army, preliminary police investigations suggest that intermediaries facilitated their journey through illegal means.
