KATHMANDU: The government has taken a stern stance on the Chinese social media platform TikTok following a surge in posts that promote social discord and hatred.

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification on Sunday, declaring its intention to automatically remove content that spreads hatred and malice on TikTok.

In a bid to curb the misuse of social networks, the government has initiated the automatic removal of illicit content published and disseminated on the platform.

Joint Secretary Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Home Affairs, announced that a meeting took place at the Ministry of Home Affairs last Friday. The meeting aimed to enhance collaboration between government agencies, including the Cyber Bureau of the Nepal Police, and TikTok’s Singapore office to combat social media abuse, facilitate the automatic removal of prohibited content, and take legal action against offenders. Discussions also involved representatives from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, security agencies, and international TikTok representatives.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has asserted that this measure will enable the swift removal of content that undermines social harmony, fosters hatred and animosity, degrades specific individuals, ethnicities, and religions, and promotes obscene activities. It will also help identify and prosecute individuals engaged in such actions.

The Ministry emphasized that inappropriate content disseminated on social media has adverse effects on individuals and society, sometimes tarnishing the character of individuals, disrupting peace and security, disturbing ethnic, linguistic, and religious harmony, and undermining national unity and interests.

As responsible citizens, the ministry has urged all concerned parties to act as responsible citizens by sharing only educational content that complies with the law and promotes social harmony, in order to avoid legal consequences for engaging in unlawful activities.
