Koshi Province Cabinet Expansion: UML quits Koshi govt

BIRATNAGAR: Expressing dissatisfaction with Chief Minister Kedar Karki’s appointment of ministers from the CPN-Maoist Center and the CPN-Unified Socialist, the CPN-UML left the Koshi government on Saturday.

Minister Ram Bahadur Rana Magar, who represented the UML in the Nepali Congress (NC)-led cabinet, submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Karki on Saturday morning.

He was appointed as a minister without a portfolio on the very day Chief Minister Karki was sworn into office.

“UML decided to quit the government as Chief Minister Karki did not abide by the agreement made with it,” Rana said after submitting his resignation.

Karki, who became the chief minister after rebelling from NC with the support of UML, administered the oath to one minister each from the Maoist Center and the Unified Socialist Party on Friday without UML’s consent.

The UML leaders had already announced their intention to leave the government shortly after the incident.
