Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah moves SC against EC fine

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah (Balen) has filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court (SC) against the Election Commission (EC) decision to fine him on the charge of not submitting the election expense details on time.

Earlier, Mayor Shah had requested the Commission not to fine him as he had already submitted the details within the given time. However, as EC took no action against the Mayor’s request and asked him to submit the fine at the earliest,  he approached the apex court.

In the writ filed on Tuesday, the Kathmandu Mayor claimed that he submitted details of his local election campaigning expenses one day after 30 days period allocated by the commission was over as the last day of the allocated period was a public holiday.

The commission had decided to impose a fine of Rs 750,000 on him accusing him of submitting the expense details late.

Mayor Shah sought an interim order to deter the EC decision until the final verdict comes from the court.
