Pillion passenger dies when motorcycle fell into pit in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: A man died when a motorcycle skidded off the road and fell into the pit in an under-construction bridge near Bagmati bridge at Shantinagar in Kathmandu Metropolitan City-31.

The deceased has been identified as Sushil Gurung, 17, of Changunarayan Municipality-4 in Bhaktapur, the pillion passenger on the ill-fated motorcycle, said the police. The motorcycle rider who was seriously injured in the accident is receiving treatment in Civil Hospital in Minbhavan.

The motorcycle (Ba Pra 02-039 Cha 1197) was heading to Tinkune from New Baneshwor when the accident took place, said Superintendent of Police Kumodh Dhungel, spokesperson for the District Police Range, Kathmandu.

According to him, injured Saroj Gurung, 20, of Changunarayan Municipality-4 in Bhaktapur, the motorcycle rider, is undergoing treatment in Civil Hospital, he said. His right leg has been fractured and he is not in the state to speak, said the police.

According to preliminary investigations, Gurung was riding the motorcycle under the influence of alcohol, and further investigations are underway, said SP Dhungel.
