International Vulture Awareness Day to be observed

KATHMANDU: The International Vulture Awareness Day is to be observed in 33 districts including Kanchanpur.

International Vulture Day is celebrated on the first Saturday of September every year.

Bird Conservation Association Nepal is leading the celebration of the 14th International Vulture Awareness Day from September 1 to 7.

The day will be celebrated in more than 33 districts with the involvement of more than 67 community-based organizations, non-governmental organizations, schools, campuses, various government agencies and the media, said ornithologist at the Association Hiru Lal Dagaura.

Vulture Awareness Day is being celebrated since 2009 following the celebration that started in South Africa in 2005.

“In Kailali and Kanchanpur, there are data of breeding of paddy vulture, small gray vulture, gobre vulture and golden vulture”, bird expert Dagoura said, “Dangar vulture, small brown vulture and golden vulture are under IUCN critical status, while gobre vulture is in rare condition.”

Seven species of vultures are found in Kailali and Kanchanpur.

The royal vulture and gray vulture come to spend the winter as guests in Nepal during winter.

Although the Himalayan vulture is native to Nepal, it has been observed that it only comes to Terai in winter.
