Mayors of metropolitan cities call for separate law to govern local governments

POKHARA: The population of Narpa Bhumi Rural Municipality in Manang is 538 and that of Kathmandu metropolis is about 1 million. The population has slightly increased compared to census of 2011.

However, the law governing both these municipalities is the same. The Local Government Operation Act 2017 governs both local bodies.

Mayors of all six metropolitan cities, who met in Pokhara on Saturday, have demanded a separate law to govern their governments be formed, keeping in mind the population and geography of local levels.

Mayors of all six metropolitan cities in Nepal have sought a more dedicated act for effective governance.

After the country adopted federalism, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Pokhara, Bharatpur, Birgunj and Biratnagar are the only metropolitan cities in the country.

From the Mayors conference, the mayors called on the federal parliament to take initiatives to address problems faced by the local governments.

Likewise, they demanded legislative reforms in existing laws concerned as well.

Meanwhile, mayors have expressed their commitment to strengthening their cooperation with each other and their respective provincial and federal governments.

They have planned to establish a forum to connect the leading officials of metropolitan cities.
