EC issues local level election directive, 2022



KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has issued the local level election directive, 2022.

As per the directive, any eligible person filing for election candidacy should self-declare his/her status- age, qualification, name in voter list, among others.

In addition to the self-declaration by the election candidate, the directive has incorporated the provision on election officer, chief returning officer, voting officer and employees.

The rights and duties of all involved directly in election are explained in the directive.

The qualification, nomination, voters, and vote counting are also in the directive, which are aimed at effective management of election.

The new feature of the directive this time is self-declaration by the person who files for candidacy in the local level election. In order to be eligible to file candidacy, he/she must be a Nepali citizen, committed to Constitution of Nepal, above 21 years, listed in the voters’ list at the related municipality or rural municipality. He must not have been disqualified by the laws on local level elections.

Moreover, the candidate becomes qualified if he/she is not in any position remunerated or given any financial incentives from the government of any tier. His/her name must not be included in the closed list of the members to the House of Representatives.

He/she must not be liable to return any assets to the local level and produce legally verifiable documents. He/she is disqualified if he/she has taken foreign resident permit as Diversity Visa (DV) or Permanent Resident (PR).
