After seeing man on TIA runway, plane ‘overshoots’ to avoid accident

KATHMANDU: A Jajira Airlines flight from Kuwait to Nepal was forced to take off after seeing people walking on the runway while landing at Tribhuvan International Airport on Sunday morning.

At around 3.20 am on Sunday, the pilot of Jajira Airlines flight J9541 carrying 107 passengers from Kuwait to Nepal saw people walking at the airport during landing and immediately returned to the sky to save the plane from crashing.

The plane carrying 107 passengers was nearing a major accident at the Tribhuvan International Airport due to negligence on the part of the airport management. Even though people are not allowed to walk on the runway, there was one noticed walking when Jajira was trying to land at TIA.

The plane crew, very wisely, made the plane fly in the sky of Kathmandu for about 20 minutes and escaped the accident.

When inquired about the incident, the airport management said that the person who reached the airport was cleaning staff.

Though similar incidents have been taking place at TIA before, there is widespread protest saying that the authority has not worked enough to address the concern.

Prem Nath Thakur, general manager of the airport’s civil aviation office, said it was a normal incident. Thakur promised to instruct staff to take better precautions ahead.
