NC General Secretary Thapa underscores endorsement of MCC compact

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has urged all lawmakers to endorse the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact with descriptive notes.

Participating in the Sunday meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) for deliberation in principles on the MCC Compact, Thapa said that NC wished that the MCC would be approved in consensus of one and all. Thapa clarified that NC upheld the notion that Nepal should seek cooperation for the development of the country and enter into various agreements such as Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPPA) with India, Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) with China and MCC with the USA.

Thapa, also former minister, reminded that all political parties leading the government in the last decade and all prime ministers holding the reign of the government since then had been involved in taking forward the MCC. Thus, he said, there was no point in protesting the MCC at present.

Furthermore, he claimed that rumors were spread that once the MCC was endorsed, it would remain above the law of the land. Hence, he viewed, that all parties should work together to dispel the misinterpretation surrounding the MCC.

According to him, the parliament, however, should shed light on the concerns and queries raised by the public on the MCC and MCC should be endorsed with descriptive notes. “Let’s endorse the MCC and work in the best interest of our country with the support of the USA, China and India,” he urged.
