Police uncover illegal business of counterfeit alcohol in Kathmandu, five persons arrested

KATHMANDU: Police have uncovered illegal business of counterfeit alcohol (unsafe alcohol) taking place in Kathmandu Valley for the past six months.

The business of counterfeit liquor was exposed after a team of District Police Office, Kathmandu, nabbed a racket involved in producing, distributing and selling the unsafe liquor.

The police team arrested five people involved in the unsafe alcohol business from Koteshwar and Bhaktapur.

The arrested have been identified as Hari Oli, 24, and Bhagwan Basnet, 29, Bishal Oli, 20, of Dolakha, Manoj Oli, 27, and Gopi Shrestha, 27, of Kathmandu.

District Police Office Kathmandu said that they filled cheap liquor in branded liquor bottles such Double Black, Black Label, and Jack Daniels, among others, sold and delivered those unsafe liquor to night clubs, restaurants and ‘dohoris’.

Police investigation revealed that they also sold branded liquor at rates cheaper than market price and were defrauding unsuspecting consumers for the past six months.

Police said that they bought expensive and cheap liquor from the market at the same time after which they mixed a little bit of expensive liquor with comparatively higher quantity of cheap liquor and distributed such unsafe alcohol to various places.

They used to open bottles of expensive liquor and mix other liquors and chemicals.

The police have also seized the raw materials used to mix in alcohol.

Police said that an investigation is being carried out to ascertain which chemicals were put in the mix alcohol.

Police investigation against them is underway on black marketing charges by taking remand of seven days from District Administration Office, Kathmandu.

The arrest was made on August 23 (Tuesday).
