Nomination filing deadline for May 13 local election expires

As many as 23,517 candidates registered with the EC till 2 pm today



KATHMANDU: Deadline for the nomination filing for the May 13 local election has expired at 5 pm today, Monday.

Candidates filed their nominations at their respective office of the election officer at 753 local levels between 10 am and 5 pm on Sunday and Monday. Two days were provided for the purpose this year, breaking with tradition of yesteryears.

As per the election calendar published by the Election Commission (EC), the nomination filing started on Sunday at 10 am and closed at 5 pm Monday.

The local election for a total of 35,221 positions at 753 local levels across the country is taking place on May 13.

The process of updating details of candidates registered for the poll has been underway, said the EC.

A total of 23,517 candidates have registered with the EC till 2 pm today and the candidacy update is underway, according to the EC preliminary data.

According to the EC, 1,031 candidates have so far contested for the post of mayor, 871 for the post of rural municipality chairperson, 530 for the post of deputy mayor, 496 for the post of rural municipality vice-chairperson, 6,322 for the post of ward chairperson, 3,575 for women members, 3,006 for Dalit women members and 7,686 for members as of 2 pm Monday.

According to the poll calendar, the publication of the candidates’ preliminary list will take place today itself and complaints against the nomination of candidates would be sought tomorrow (Tuesday).

Investigations into the complaints will occur on Wednesday and Thursday. The publication of candidates’ list after the investigations into complaints would be held on Thursday itself.

Candidacy withdrawal and publication of the candidates’ final list would take place on Friday and election symbols would be distributed on Saturday.
