CPN-US declares candidates in Lalitpur metropolis defying deal struck with coalition partners

KATHMANDU: The CPN-Unified Socialist (CPN-US) has announced mayoral and deputy mayoral candidates in Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC), defying the agreement reached among the ruling coalition parties.

According to the party’s Lalitpur deputy in-charge Amrit Timalsina, the CPN-US decided to field Harikrishna Thapa as mayor and Usha Bajracharya as deputy mayor in LMC.

As per the deal among ruling coalition parties, the seat of LMC mayor was given to the Nepali Congress (NC) and the seat of deputy mayor to the CPN-Maoist Center.

The provincial committees of the NC and the Maoist Center also distributed all remaining municipalities of Lalitpur district among themselves on Sunday. In the course of seat-sharing, the CPN-US had not been allocated the seats of chief and deputy chief of the remaining Lalitpur local levels.

The NC also staked claim for both seats of chief and deputy chief in Godavari Municipality. Similarly, the seat of chief of Mahalaxmi Municipality was given to the Maoist Center and the deputy chief to the NC.

Likewise, the Maoist got the seat of chairperson of Konjyosom Rural Municipality and the deputy chair’s seat was agreed for the NC. The NC and the Maoists also divided chair and deputy chair’s seats respectively for them in Bagmati Rural Municipality and Mahankal Rural Municipality.

According to Timilsina, the NC and the Maoists showed political arrogance by not giving the CPN-US a single seat in any of the local levels of Lalitpur district.

In protest, the party declared candidates in LMC, shared Timilsina.
