Major General Karki on leave; Adhikari in line for two-star general

KATHMANDU: Major General Ananta Karki of Nepali Army took a leave on Sunday after handing over his responsibility to Major General Bhola Thapa.

Karki will retire on February 6 since his tenure was not extended. There is a provision of taking leave 15 days before the retirement.

Karki had lobbied the President, Prime Minister, Defense Minister and Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) and chairman of the National Assembly for his term extension, accusing Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Prabhu Ram Sharma of not extending his tenure with an ill-intent.

The government had only extended the tenure of Sita Ram Khadka and Tarardhwaj Pandey after CoAS Sharma did not recommend to extend Karki’s the term.

The right to extend tenure of army officials rests with the CoAS.

Karki is alleged to have played roles in taking actions against many army officials during the tenure of General Purna Chandra Thapa as CoAS.

With the retirement of Karki, Brigadier General Prem Dhwaj Adhikarai is in line for the promotion to a two-star general.
