Maoist Center fulfills commitments related to citizenship: Prachanda



KATHMANDU: CPN Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has said that he fulfilled his commitment made to the Madhesi people by passing the Citizenship Bill.

Speaking at a program held in Sarlahi’s Bagmati Municipality on Saturday, he said when he visited Madhesh last time he vowed to resolve the citizenship problem through the upcoming session of parliament, and now it has been resolved.

“I assured that the citizenship problem of Terai Madhes would be resolved in the upcoming session of Parliament at all costs,” he said, adding, “… yesterday the citizenship problem has been solved.”

He also congratulated those citizens who had been deprived of citizenship for long. “The Maoist center has fulfilled what it promised,” Prachanda said.

The House of Representatives on Friday passed a bill to amend the Citizenship Act 2063. With the passage of the bill, children of Nepali parents who had obtained citizenship based on birth are to received citizenship on the basis of descent.

Likewise, Nepali citizens whose father’s identity is not know will also get citizenship through their mother’s name.
