NC parliamentarians vote to elect NC PP leader

Results announcement to be made today itself



KATHMANDU: Voting to elect the parliamentary party (PP) leader of the Nepali Congress – the largest party in the federal parliament concluded at Singha Durbar.

Security was tightened in Singha Durbar as the ruling Nepali Congress (NC), the largest party in the House of Representatives, was holding an election to pick its Parliamentary Party leader on Wednesday morning.

Prime Minister and NC President and Sher Bahadur Deuba and general-secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa are in the race for the parliamentary party leader.

According to the NC parliamentary party leader and working committee election committee, vote count and results announcement of PP leader election would be made today itself.

It may be noted that NC had secured a total of 89 seats, including 57 under direct electoral system and32 under the proportional representation system in the parliamentary election held on November 20.

Senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel proposed the candidacy of President Deuba for parliamentary party leader while Dr Shekhar Koirala has proposed the candidacy of general-secretary Thapa for the same.

Likewise, party vice-president Purna Bahadur Khadka supported the candidacy of Deuba whereas another vice-president Dhanraj Gurung, general-secretary Biswo Prakash Sharma and central member Pradeep Poudel supported Thapa’s candidacy.

The committee had set the time from 2.00 pm to 3.00 on Tuesday for filing candidacy.

The election has been taken as important event in the NC since the parliamentary party leader would be the PM candidate on behalf of the party.

NC has initiated efforts to form the new government under its leadership as the largest party in the parliament.
