“Nepal and US stand at important juncture to address today’s pressing issues”

KATHMANDU: Newly appointed United States (US) Ambassador to Nepal Dean R. Thompson has said that Nepal and the US stood at an important juncture to address most pressing issues of today.

Issuing a statement after presenting his credentials to President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Friday, he said, “Right now is an important moment for our countries, and I look forward to working with all Nepalis to address the most pressing issues of our time.”

The Ambassador presented his credentials to President Bhandari amidst a special program organized at the President’s Office, Shital Niwas, this afternoon.

“It is an honor to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Nepal. I am humbled by the opportunity and determined to serve with an unwavering commitment to the U.S. – Nepal relationship, one that is based on respect for sovereignty and common values,” the envoy added.

“In the coming years, the United States will continue to support Nepal in achieving its goal of sustainable and inclusive economic growth. As the climate crisis impacts the Himalayan region, we will help bolster Nepal’s climate resilience through innovative programming and partnership,” the statement further read.

The US Ambassador also pledged to work with civil society, free media, and government to continue defending democracy and strengthening the will of the people, free from corruption, disinformation, and repression.

“In our 75th year of U.S. – Nepal diplomatic relations, I look ahead to my tenure with immense optimism that the successes of the next 75 years will surpass even the greatest achievements of our last,” he said.

Ambassador Thompson came to Nepal last week to replace Randy Berry, who was serving as the US ambassador since October 2018.
