Dizziness is mostly caused by ear problems

KATHMANDU: The problem of dizziness is increasing among people these days. Even when there is pressure from different work and problems in different parts of the body, there is a problem of giddiness. Doctors say that the problem of wooziness in the ears is also increasing due to ear problems, blood pressure, diabetes, etc.

Khabarhub’s Bina Neupane approached Dr. Sangya Poudel, an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) expert, to talk about the problems relating to the growing instances of giddiness among the people.

Here are the excerpts:

Lately, many people have been suffering from dizziness, what causes it?

First, we need to understand what dizziness is. This can be a result due to various problems like not eating, low or high blood pressure, nausea, etc. If there is a problem in the body, head, eyes, or muscles, we feel dizzy.

What has been the main cause of giddiness, as established by the research so far?

Dizziness can occur due to the problem of the ear. Out of 100 cases of dizziness, 80 are related to ear problems, and the remaining 20 percent are related to the head.

What causes dizziness due to ear problems?

Tiny calcium particles in our ears move to different places than where they should be for various reasons. Because of that, when the head is turned from side to side, or while lying on sides we might feel the dizziness reducing and recurring again.

If treated on time, it can be cured, otherwise, it will last forever. There is a possibility of transmission to some extent when there is vitamin D deficiency. This has been reported by various studies. Apart from that, there is nothing else to say that this is the main reason.

Can a person get symptoms that s/he is likely to succumb to dizziness?

No one knows beforehand. If it is the first time, everything seems to be spinning. If this is repeated again and again, it can be assumed that now a person feels giddiness.

In what age group is it seen more?

This applies to all age groups. Especially in the elderly, the tissues of the body weaken with age and the tissue of the ear also weakens.

It is said that this problem is also seen in the young generation, is it because of the ear?

Migraine also causes dizziness. Too much use of TV, and cell phones while eating and sleeping, without proper physical support, causes migraine problems and might result in giddiness.

Is it genetic?

If one of the parents has it in heredity, then there might appear problems of less hearing and dizziness. However, provided it is identified on time and treated, it can be healed.

When can one stay at home and when should one consult the doctor about dizziness-related problems?

If you feel dizziness when you stand up after sitting in a place for a long time or when you have not taken a meal, the dizziness might have been due to the decline in sugar level. More than that, if happens while walking or while working, then you should go for treatment.

How is the case treated when the patient goes to the hospital after the problem becomes chronic?

First, we need to separate the head stroke. We call it paralysis. Sometimes dizziness might occur even due to paralysis of the head. We distinguish heart attacks. If it is not dangerous, we will treat the ear. We look at the condition of the patient and find out what caused it. And we treat them accordingly.

Is there a possibility of getting the problem recurs even after treatment?

Everything depends on the nature of the disease. It may recur in case of migraines, for that we should push back with treatment, adopt a healthy lifestyle, go for less consumption of salt, and eat vegetables. Some have other reasons which cause paralysis of the nerve itself. In that case, it will be difficult for 3 to 4 months. We can heal by doing therapies.

What kind of food intake should one take when there is such a problem?

You should not eat much salt and abstain from cold drinks for migraine cases. One should not stay on empty stomach much; one should eat fish, and legumes, but should avoid chocolates.

Why should a person take dark chocolate?

Sometimes doctors suggest eating chocolate. When blood sugar is low, chocolates increase the amount of sugar in the blood quickly. It should be used for momentary pleasure and to bring the sugar level to normalcy. If you take much tea and chocolate, it will cause more migraine problems.

What should one do to avoid such a problem relating to dizziness?

Living a healthy life, exercising for 40 minutes in the morning, even the elderly should exercise regularly, eat healthy meals, get enough sleep, and reduce the use of mobile, TV, etc help live a better life.

Lastly, what message do you want to add relating to this problem?

If we take care of nose problems, ear problems, and other problems, if we can avoid dust and smoke, we don’t have to suffer big consequences from small things.
