Govt rebuffs NHRC’s recommendations

KATHMANDU: The implementation of the recommendation of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has been found meager.

The NHRC frequently recommends the government, seek action against the perpetrators in the cases of human rights violations.

An official at NHRC Khimanand Basyal has said only 14 percent of its recommendations were implemented by the government.

Presenting the data on violations and implementation, Basyal informed that NHRC had furnished 1,237 recommendations to the government till Mangsir 2078.

Among them, 1,167 are about action and compensation and 119 related to policy. However, only 173 (14%) recommendations were implemented by the government.

Similarly, 38 percent of recommendations are partially implemented. Nearly half are under consideration.

NHRC recommends the government for action against human rights violations in a bid to cater justice to the victims, make the State accountable by protecting human rights, and not repeat violations.

It is to contribute to the rule of law. On the occasion, NHRC Commissioner Dr. Surya Dhungel also said it was worrying why the government was not effectively implementing NHRC recommendations.
