Visiting WHO chief calls on Foreign Minister Dr Khadka, Health Minister Khatiwada



KATHMANDU: Visiting Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has called on Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Narayan Khadka and Minister of Health and Population Birodh Khatiwada.

A meeting was held between the WHO chief and Foreign Minister Dr Narayan Khadka at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at Singha Durbar in Kathmandu on Thursday. The WHO chief landed in Kathmandu Thursday morning for a three-day visit.

It has been learnt that bilateral interests were discussed during the meeting held at Singha Durbar.

WHO Director General Tedros also called on Health Ministry Khatiwada at the latter’s office.

During the meeting, Minister Khatiwada pledged Nepal’s support for re-electing the WHO chief for a second term in May.

Minister Khatiwada also thanked the WHO chief for providing various assistances to the Government of Nepal in addressing the health needs of the Nepali people. He added Nepal needed cooperation from the WHO in the areas of quality control and access to medicines, advanced laboratories, regulatory capacity, human resource development, technology transfer and medical research and diagnosis, among others.

Minister Khatiwada also shared Nepal’s plan to formulate an integrated national health financial strategy to increase the equal access of all to health services.

During the meeting, Director General Dr. Tedros pledged WHO’s continued support to Nepal.
