Unified Socialist holding SC meeting today

To take official decision on MCC

KATHMANDU: CPN (Unified Socialist) is holding a Standing Committee (SC) meeting today to take an official decision on the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

The SC meeting has been called for 11 am at Aryal Hotel in New Baneshwor, informed Jagannath Khatiwada, the spokesperson of the Unified Socialist.

The meeting will dwell on the report on the MCC submitted at the party’s central secretariat by a task-force team and come up with a final decision on the issue.

The ruling alliance Unified Socialist has not yet taken an official decision on the issue at a time when the Nepali Congress, which is taking the lead in the government, has been taking a stand in favor of endorsing the MCC.

The Unified Socialist has been saying that the MCC should not be endorsed without making necessary amendments to it and without the consent of the other political parties.

On the other hand, the CPN (Maoist Center) has warned that it would quit the government if the MCC was tabled by force.

Main opposition CPN-UML is in a wait-and-see mode. It has said that it will take an official stand on the MCC only after the ruling coalition comes up with the official views on it.

There have been anti-MCC demonstrations across the country at a time while the preparations are being made to table the MCC in a meeting of the House of Representatives.

The deadline to endorse the MCC by the parliament requested by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda is expiring on February 28.

Meanwhile, America has warned that the future of the MCC will be on hold if it is not endorsed by the deadline.
