Voting underway to fix name and capital of State 2



KATHMANDU: State 2 Assembly is voting to finalize name and capital of the province Monday. The voting is underway.

Speaker Saroj Kumar Yadav started the voting after deliberations were made to forge consensus on the capital and name of the province for the past two days.

A special committee formed to fix the capital and naming of Province 2 submitted a proposal to the assembly Sunday.

According to the Chair of the special committee, Parameshwar Shah said there was consensus among all parties on a few of the names and options for capital.

Speaking in the state assembly, he said, “All parties unanimously propose to make Janakpur the capital.”

However, some lawmakers from Bara-Parsa proposed Birgunj as the capital. Lawmaker Ramesh Prasad Kurung argued Birgunj movement was a Madhes movement; therefore, Birgunj should be made the capital.

However, a majority agrees more on Janakpur as capital.

Currently, there are 104 lawmakers in State 2 Assembly. Two thirds of 104 it becomes 70.

As many as 70 votes is required to determine capital and name of Province 2.
