Issues between Nepal and India should be resolved diplomatically: Prachanda



KATHMANDU: CPN Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has said that the issues of the 1950 treaty between Nepal and India, border and the submission of the report of the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) should be resolved through diplomatic means.

He said so at a program organized by the Foundation for Public Awareness and Policy in New Delhi on Saturday, adding that these problems can be solved through the spirit of good neighborliness.

“There is a need to resolve the issues of the 1950 treaty, the border problem and the report of the group of eminent persons through diplomatic dialogue. We can solve the problem from the spirit of good neighborliness,” Prachanda said.

Stating that the relationship between Nepal and India has been strong since time immemorial, the Maoist chair said that any problem could be solved through diplomatic dialogue.

A group of eminent persons was formed with the participation of the representatives of the two countries to give suggestions for the revision of the treaty of 1950 between Nepal and India.

The report prepared by the group has not yet been acknowledged by both the governments of Nepal and India.

Thought it was said that the Indian Prime Minister would received the EPG report and later the representative of Nepal would the same. However, the report still awaits reception of the Indian Prime Minister.

Chair Prachanda also urged India to increase investment in Nepal’s agriculture, infrastructure, and tourism sectors. Mentioning that the government of Nepal prioritized the export industry, he added investments in export sector would yeild high returns.

Prachanda visited India at the invitation of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

Earlier today, he met with Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar.

He is scheduled to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.
