Suspended CJ Rana denied decoration

KATHMANDU: The government did not confer the honorary title on suspended Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana even though it had earlier decided to adorn him.

The government had decided to confer a coveted honorary title ‘Mahaujjwal Rashtradeep’ on Rana six months ago on Constitution Day (Ashwin 3, 2078).

Rana was not called to the ceremony held at Shital Niwas for the distribution of decorations and honorary titles yesterday.

Even though Rana’s name is featured in the list made public by the Home Ministry, a meeting of the Ministry on Wednesday had decided to halt his title until his corruption case is settled.

Rana had been suspended after an impeachment motion was filed against him at the Supreme Court on February 13.

A tradition has it that the decorations announced on Constitution Day are distributed on Nepali New Year (Baisakh 1).

The government had decided to confer decorations and honorary titles on as many 906 eminent personalities this year, for which Rs 180 million has been spent.

The President distributes the decorations and honorary titles as per the tradition.
