6.7-magnitude quake hits Indonesian island



KATHMANDU:  An earthquake mearing 6.7 on the Richter scale has struck off the west coast of Sumartra Island of Indonesia on early Monday.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the powerful earthquake jolted the Indonesian island with its epicentre 167 km west of coastal city Pariaman.

It started at a depth of 21 km, said the USGS.

People ran outdoors in panic to their safety while the tremor lasted for about one minute, said National Disaster Risk Reduction Unit in its preliminary report.

The major quake is being followed by several aftershocks. Damages and casualties caused by the earthquake have not yet been reported. (With inputs from Agencies)
