EC preliminary estimate puts local election voter turnout at 64 percent

KATHMANDU: Voter turnout in the local level election held Friday has stood at 64 percent.

Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Thapaliya said that the voter turnout since 7 am to 5 pm today was about 64 percent.

“Voting is still ongoing in some places and we do not have concrete data for the whole of the country as of now but according to the preliminary data we collected, about 64 percent voting has taken place,” he said.

Speaking at a press conference Friday evening, he put the voter turnout in Kathmandu at around 52 percent. “This is as per our preliminary data. We are not happy with the figures, the Election Commission (EC) estimated higher turnout,” he said.

The EC commission had earlier estimated the turnout in Kathmandu to be somewhere between 65 and 70 percent.

Chief Election Commissioner Thapaliya added security arrangements were felt to be lacking as the election across the country was held in single phase. He also said political parties and candidates were uncooperative towards the EC.
