HoR to discuss impeachment motion against suspended CJ today

KATHMANDU: The House of Representatives (HoR) is to discuss the impeachment motion against suspended Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana today.

A notice made public by the Parliament Secretariat on Friday has listed two agendas for today’s HoR meet.

One of the agenda is Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota fixing the date and time for discussion on the impeachment motion.

The impeachment motion against CJ Rana, who is currently suspended, was proposed by Maoist Center Chief Whip Dev Gurung, Nepali Congress (NC) Whip Pushpa Bhusal and CPN-Unified Socialist (CPN-US) Chief Whip Jivan Ram Shrestha on February 13 and seconded by 95 lawmakers from all three parties.

Earlier, the HoR formed an impeachment recommendation committee comprising 11 lawmakers from the major parties.

The main opposition which has been obstructing the HoR for long also has four members in the impeachment recommendation committee.

The committee is to submit its investigation report on the impeachment against Rana within three months of starting its work as per HoR rules. The final report of the impeachment recommendation committee will be forwarded to the HoR for discussion.

Following the discussion, HoR will put the motion to vote if it deems the charges against CJ Rana are valid. If two-thirds majority of parliamentarians vote in favor of the impeachment, then Rana will be dismissed from the post of Chief Justice or else he will resume his office.

Likewise, in today’s HoR meeting, Public Accounts Committee Chairman Bharat Kumar Shah will also present the 21st annual report of the committee.
