KATHMANDU: The camp led by Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala, which was against the idea of electoral alliance in the local-level elections, is “aggrieved” with the party leadership.

It has criticized the party leadership for deviating from the party’s principles and ideals, and that the party did not get the expected results from the electoral alliance in the recently-concluded local-level election.

“Yes, NC won a few more seats due to the alliance. But it is a matter of serious concern that the party leadership has deviated from its ideals and principles,” a leader close to Dr. Koirala said.

In fact, during a central committee meeting of the party held on Monday, Dr. Koirala, who leads the disgruntled camp, demanded an answer from the party leadership, and party President Sher Bahadur Deuba on the issue.

The camp led by Dr. Koirala, which has been alleging party President Deuba for not complying with the party statute, has adopted a strategy to exert pressure on the leadership to drag the latter to track.

Dr. Koirala submitted a 12-point opinion on the issue of party, government and alliance during Monday’s meeting held at the party central office, Sanepa.

The faction had last week decided to exert pressure on the party leadership to call the CWC meeting and implement the statutory provision on the issues of leadership selection of the sister organizations, and formation of departments, among other issues.

“The electoral alliance benefited other parties more than the Nepali Congress. The party should have been united, and tickets distributed fairly on the basis of geography, population and ethnic balance based on the criteria of contribution, popularity and seniority, which, unfortunately, did not happen,” Dr. Koirala told the leadership.

The Koirala-led faction has been criticizing President Deuba for his non-compliance with the statute, and for not convening a timely meeting of the party’s central working committee.

The faction had last week decided to exert pressure on the party leadership to call the CWC meeting and implement the statutory provision on the issues of leadership selection of the sister organizations, and formation of departments, among other issues.

The Koirala camp has been alleging party President Deuba for unilaterally nominating his close ones to the leadership of Nepal Student’s Union (NSU) and Tarun Dal.

NC President Deuba nominated Dujang Sherpa as the President of NSU, and Bidhan Gurung as Tarun Dal president.

It’s been already six months since the party’s 14th General Convention.

According to the statute, the Departments were to be formed within six months.

The party is holding its central working committee meeting today as well.
