Land mafias should be brought to book: PM Deuba

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that the authorities concerned need to tighten the noose as land mafias are grabbing land in various places in Kathmandu.

Addressing a consultative seminar on National Urban Policy, Urban Development Act and Utility Corridor Act in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Prime Minister Deuba lamented that few people were grabbing the land and the  government bodies concerned took no notice of it.

Consumer price inflation stood at 7.14% in last 8 months: NRB

The year-on-year consumer price inflation in the country stood at 7.14 percent in the eight months of 2021/22 compared to 3.03 percent a year ago, according to Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB).

Food and beverage inflation stood at 7.51 percent whereas non-food and service inflation stood at 6.84 percent in the review month, it said.

Releasing a report on the Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation of Nepal, NRB said under the food and beverage category, the prices of ghee & oil, vegetable, milk products and eggs and pulses & legumes sub-categories rose by 26.34 percent, 13.96 percent, 11.30 and 10.30 percent respectively on year-on-year (y-o-y) basis.

Canadian ambassador meets energy Minister Bhusal

The newly-appointed Ambassador of Canada to Nepal, Cameron Dean MacKay, paid a courtesy call on Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Pampha Bhusal at her office in Singha Durbar on Tuesday.

On the occasion, they discussed the mutual relations subsisting between Nepal and Canada and various topics of cooperation.

NEPSE declines by 34.78 points Tuesday

The stock market declined on Tuesday. The stock market index fell by 34.78 points to 2,385.2.

A total of 3,783,024 shares of 237 companies were traded today resulting in a turnover of Rs 1.52 billion.

Of the total companies traded, 177 declined while 13 rose. The value of the remaining five companies is stable.

President approves mobilization of army for May 13 local election

President Bidya Devi Bhandari has given approval for mobilization of the Nepali Army in the local level election slated for May 13.

The President’s Office, issuing a press release Tuesday, said the President had approved the mobilization of the army as per the recommendation of the National Security Council on March 31 and the decision of the Council of Ministers on April 7 in the upcoming local level election to be held on May 13.

South Korean climber Hong to attempt Lhotse South Face for seventh time

South Korean climber Sung-Taek Hong is set to attempt Lhotse South Face for the seventh time this spring.

“I am making my seventh attempt on the Lhotse South Face,” Hong, 55, told a press conference in Kathmandu on Tuesday.

Lhotse South Face is one of the toughest climbs, and Hong has attempted it six times.

Peak of liquidity crisis: Borrowing reaches Rs 101 bln, liabilities cross Rs 200 bln

The ongoing liquidity crunch reached its peak yesterday (Monday) as public offices opened following the suspension of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) governor at the end of last week and Sunday being a public holiday.

Banks and financial institutions (BFIs), surpassing past records, availed Standing Liquidity Facility (SLF) of Rs 1.99 billion on Monday alone. This is the highest SLF borrowing in the history of the Central Bank, Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB).
