Nepal files candidacies for five UN posts

KATHMANDU: Nepal has staked a claim for five posts in the different committees of the United Nations.

Nepal has filed candidacies for two posts in the committees of the UN in the elections to be held this year. It has filed its candidacy for the post of vice-chairman of the UN General Assembly. The elections will be held in coming June.

A total of 21 countries will be elected as vice-chairmen in the General Assembly. Nepal has filed its candidacy on behalf of the Asia Pacific Region.

Earlier, Nepal had been elected as the vice-chairman unopposed for the 71st session of the General Assembly in 2016.

Similarly, Nepal has also filed its candidacy for the post of a member of the Independent Audit Advisory Committee of the UN General Assembly.

The election will be held between mid-October to mid-November (in the Nepali month Kartik). If elected, Nepal’s tenure will remain effective from 2023 to 2025.

A provision has it that, the General Assembly will appoint a country nominated by the member countries.

According to Sewa Lamsal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nepal has already started lobbying for votes with the member countries of the Asia Pacific Region.

“Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations in New York, Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN in Geneva, and Nepali Embassy in New Delhi are working to this end,” said Lamsal.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nepal will contest elections for the post of a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council to be held in 2023. If elected, Nepal’s term will remain effective from 2024 to 2026.

Similarly, Nepal has announced its candidacy for the post of chairman of the First Committee under the UN General Assembly in the elections to be held in 2026. This committee, which works for disarmament and international security, is considered important.

Likewise, Nepal has also decided to file its candidacy for a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the term 2037 to 38. The elections will be held in 2036.
