Experimental balloon of India’s Dehradun-based meteorological unit descends in Darchula!

KATHMANDU: A balloon connected to electronic devices fell from the sky in Naugad village of Darchula district on Thursday night.

Arjun Singh Thagunna, a local of Khar, Ward No. 3, said that the balloon, which looks like an electronic device with three batteries connected, hit the electricity pole and fell at around 8 pm. He added the balloon had on it an Indian mobile number. The balloon contained devices such as memory card slots and three batteries.

When Thagunna called the number found on the balloon, he received information that the Indian Meteorological Department in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, had set up the device to collect atmospheric data.

A team including Naugad Village Planning Branch Officer Narendra Thagunna and Disaster Management Branch Chief Krishna Singh Thagunna also reached the spot where the balloon fell.

Inspector Madhav Bishwakarma of the District Police Office, Darchula, said that no detailed information has been received as far as a police team has been deployed to investigate the incident.
