Nepal’s head coach for national football team Almutairi resigns

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s head coach for national football team Abdullah Almutairi has resigned from the post on Sunday.

He announced his resignation through social media.

“After 525 days in the service of Nepalese football, I announce the end of my tenure as coach of the Nepal national team,” he wrote on his Facebook page, adding, “Thank you to everyone who supported me on this journey that was not without moments of joy, love, sadness and pain. One Team, Jay Nepal.”

This is not the first time that he said he was stepping down. On the eve of the final of the SAFF Championship in the Maldives in October last year, Almutairi announced that he was stepping down after the final.

“The final will be my last match as Nepal coach. I will never come back,” he had said in a post-match conference after Nepal had played a 1-1 draw against Bangladesh.

He, however, returned to Nepal and took the reigns of the national team.

Almutairi was embroiled in a dispute with some footballers during the closed-camp training for AFC Asian Cup 2022 over logistics for players. Following the dispute, he had expelled 10 footballers and called up new faces into the national team.
