KATHMANDU: With the surge in coronavirus cases, the Nepal government has shut down basic and secondary level schools until January 29 starting today.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology decided to shut down 3,500 schools across the country from today (Tuesday) as per the recommendation made by the COVID-19 Crisis Mechanism Coordination Center (CCMCC) on January 9.

However, no decisions have been taken regarding teaching-learning activities of universities and other educational institutes. The Ministry has stated that the examinations will be conducted by adopting health protocols.

It has also urged the schools to make arrangements to facilitate students’ learning activities in line with the Student Learning Facilitation Guideline, 2077 BS during leave the period.

The government has taken this decision after the COVID-19 cases spiked of late, said Sunita Nepal, the spokesperson of the CCMCC.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has urged the Ministry of Health and Population to inoculate students aged 12 to 17 in the respective local units during the period.
